What does it mean to be entertained? It means that your senses are engaged and that you are enjoying yourself. In some rarer cases an imagination is even required to be entertained. Entertainment is meant to engage our imagination so that we are drawn into that we are reading or watching.
But really we have been completely spoiled. The number of young people who read actual books (not magazines) seems to the diminishing every day, and yet there is no greater tool of education or imagination. The entertainment of reading is giving your imagination free reign – imagining that you are a space traveller encountering a cockroach on a far off planet in a distant solar system.
That is imaginative entertainment, but it can take some time. For those who are more impatient there is TV and of course movies. Instant imaginative gratification: where you are whisked into the world of someone else's imagination to be entertained.
Entertainment is all around us – driving in the car we have the radio and music to keep us entertained, at home we have TV and movies or books. We love to be entertained because we love to have fun.
And so we should, we work hard and so we should also be allowed to have some fun. Entertainment releases stress and leads to an altogether happier life.
