The current population of the world is the most entertained population that our planet has ever known. We have televisions in our homes and are able to watch series, documentaries and movies all from the comfort of our own homes. Not only this but there are TVs in bars, bus stations and many other public venues besides.
This is more reminiscent of the history of film than sitting at home on a couch. This is because the history of film started at public carnivals where people would come and marvel at the amazing moving pictures, then actual buildings were erected to house these pictures – called cinemas.
And today they are everywhere - a place where anyone can go and watch the newest release of the week. Sometimes we go to watch the story that is being told, other times we go to find the star, to watch our favourite actor grace the silver screen.
We go to movies to be entertained, to be moved and to be informed and whether we are aware of it or not, movies have become one of the most vital mediums of communication in our modern world.
Movies are not only about romance they can also be used as social and political tools. Think for example of Al Gore's move 'An Inconvenient Truth', which makes us think as well as feel.
