The Advent Of TelevisionNot many people know this, but the television was not always electronic. The technology in TVs has certainly come a long way from mechanical, minuscule screens, to the age of hi-definition and digital TV. Back in the 1930s, the first TV slowly came into existence thanks to the hard work of several scientists. The first kind of TV was a part mechanical gadget with a motor, a spinning disc and a neon lamp. This contraption created an unclear reddish orange image on the tiny screen. As one can imagine, tv guide then must have meant guides explaining the basic concept of what exactly a TV was, and not a listing of TV shows! The technology was pursued and slowly but surely, in around the late 30s and early 40s, the TV became a fully electronic device. However, hardly any TV sets sold on the account of rising unemployment and the impending war. With the end of the war came hope and new beginnings. This is considered to be the real birth of Television. TVs by this time had evolved and were much bigger than the business card sized screens of the 30s. Black and white TV became common in the early 50s, soon being followed by the colour TV. This is also when remote control devices came into being. It is fascinating to know the journey of the innocuous TV set that we take for granted today! |
